Marthas Vineyard School Trip

History students visit Lahardane

Martha's Vineyard, part of Dukes County, is an island south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It is the third largest island on the East Coast of America.

On Tuesday 28th February 2012, Elaine Cawley Weintraub, Head of the History Department at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School and two other teachers, brought the school's Irish History Class to Ireland's Titanic Village.

The students visited St Patrick's Church Lahardane, where Toss Gibbons, former Principal of St Tiernan's College Crossmolina, spoke about the Titanic Church Memorial and the stained glass windows, one dedicated to Emigration and the other to the Addergoole Fourteen.

The Titanic themed stained glass window shows Boat 16 being lowered, with Addergoole survivor, Annie Kate Kelly looking up at the others who lost their lives. John Lynn spoke to the class about his relative who perished, Honora Fleming and the fact that it was her 24th birthday the night Titanic hit the iceberg. Click here for more.
